6. GTA: Vice City

Metacritic Rating: 95

GTA: Vice City is the first of three Grand Theft Auto games in the top ten on Metacritic for the PlayStation 2, and the first or two rated 95. With how well later games did it can definitely be said that Rockstar haven’t lost their touch over the years.

2002’s Vice City put players into the shoes of Tommy Vercetti who has just been released from prison and plunged again into the world of crime. The Vice City location is based on Miami in the 1980s, with gangs at the time, films, television shows and music influencing the game world and the story too.

It marked the first time that the main protagonist had a voice actor and dialogue. The missions had more meat to them compared to GTA 3, and still is thought to have the best soundtrack of any Grand Theft Auto game, although part of the latter point will be down to Africa by Toto.

5. GTA: San Andreas

Metacritic Rating: 95

Released two years after GTA: Vice City, San Andreas edged its predecessor out of the top five of the highest rated PlayStation 2 games on Metacritic. The game was the last major release in the Grand Theft Auto franchise on the PlayStation 2, with GTA IV coming out later for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation.

San Andreas had the most ambitious map yet compared to GTA: Vice City and GTA 3, with the fictional San Andreas state being based on California and Nevada. The three main cities were inspired by Los Angeles, San Francisco and Nevada, and unlike previous games also had a large amount of rural area in between that could also be explored.

The main protagonist in the game was CJ who attempts to restart his old gang after returning to Grove Street from Liberty City. It was the first time that the game included RPG elements where CJ could either bulk up or gain a big belly depending on what he ate and if you made him work out.
