Metacritic Rating: 96

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was the fourth game in the Metal Gear franchise and a sequel to the first Metal Gear Solid game. The game was praised for its gameplay, graphics and its story, which focused on a new protagonist called Raiden who fans had mixed views about. The game revolves heavily around stealth gameplay from a third-person perspective.

The game received a 96 average rating on Metacritic with the likes of Game Informer and GameSpy giving it full marks, and has sold over six million copies worldwide across all platforms. Director for the game Hideo Kojima famously left Konami a few years ago and is now working on Death Stranding with his own development studio.

3. Resident Evil 4

Metacritic Rating: 96

Resident Evil 4 puts players in control of Leon, who made his debut in Resident Evil 2, as he travels to an unknown part of Spain to save the US President’s daughter after she was kidnapped by a cult.

The game moved slightly away from his horror theme to have more of a focus on action in larger open areas, with the game being the first in the franchise to give players more of a choice of how they move, where they can shoot and how they interact with the environment.

The result from Capcom is arguably one of the most influential games of that decade for third-person shooters, especially the over-the-shoulder camera angle introduced for the third-person action which has now become normal in similar video games. The game received a 96 average Metacritic rating for both the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo’s Gamecube versions, and overall across all platforms it has released on has sold over 7.5 million copies.
